How to make a willow fence?
To make a willow fence, we use the approx. 5-metre-long branches of a willow tree, braided around chestnut or willow poles. These willow branches are called willow twigs or willow strips. We have our own willow nursery for this purpose.
The sturdy 2 to 3-centimetre-thick branches of a willow are supple and bendable. This makes them ideal for making a fence or natural partition in the garden.
Braiding a willow fence is best done in the months of November to June. Then the branches are the most flexible. It is also important to make the fence quickly (what is fast, within 3 weeks is fast enough) after receiving the willows. Otherwise the branches dry out and break when braiding.
How long do you spend braiding?
That depends on the size of your desired fence or enclosure. On average, it takes one day with 2 people to weave 15 m². And that will be a great day. Because it is quite an experience to be busy with one of the oldest crafts of our country.
So get to work!
Below you will find a short step-by-step plan for making a willow fence or partition. This way you are completely prepared and can start your DIY package right away.
Step 1: Preparation
First of all, make sure the surface is free of weeds and even. The flatter the ground, the more beautiful and straighter the end result will be. Then the posts are put in the ground.
The posts should be 60 to 80 cm in the ground. This ensures that the fence is firmly erected and will not easily be blown over. An auger can help you make the holes for the posts easier.
If you order the posts directly with the do-it-yourself package, just fill in the desired height of the fence. We automatically add the extra centimetres you need for sufficient strength.
To protect the posts against wood rot and mould, we offer you the option of ordering postsavers with the do-it-yourself pack. These postsavers are applied around the posts with a roof torch. They ensure that the life span of your posts is at least doubled. Our online manual describes exactly how to install the postsavers.
Step 2: Braiding
When the poles are in place, the braiding begins. Always braid the willow branches in one direction. So from left to right or right to left.
Then you braid the branches around the poles. You start at the first post and braid the branch until it is finished. Then you cut the branch just behind a post and start with the second branch. This one you plait from the second pole and so on until you reach the last pole.
In this way you plait layer after layer and build up the fence. In our online manual we explain exactly how to braid the branches for the best result.
Step 3: Maintenance for a longer service life
A willow fence will last 10 years on average if you maintain it well. We advise you to use linseed oil. You can also order this oil directly with your do-it-yourself kit.
It is best to treat the willow twigs with linseed oil 6 weeks after installation, when the weather is dry. You can then repeat this treatment annually.
Do you want to extend the life span by another 5 years?
Then place climbing plants against the fence. Think of the well-known ivy, beautiful wisteria or fresh Clematis Montana. This will immediately make your garden a lot greener.
